It is WRAP's first ever Food Waste Action Week from 1-7th March 2021. Here's what we will be doing.
Food waste is a colossal problem. WRAP research has found that food waste accounts for the world’s third highest greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for the waste of precious natural resources as 70% of global freshwater is used up by agriculture. All of this means reducing food waste has the potential to help tackle climate change.
The United Nations have recognised reducing food waste as an integral part of their Sustainable Development Goals set out for all its members:
By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.
- UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3
Closer home, WRAP’s research has also found that UK homes throw away nearly 4.5 million tonnes of edible food. This has to stop.
Food Waste Action Week by WRAP intends to shine a light on the issue of food waste and get people to take action in their own lives and in their businesses to reduce their impact on the planet. With prominent chefs, industry bodies like the Sustainable Restaurant Association and TV personalities like Nadiya Hussain endorsing the project, WRAP really wants us all to make reducing food waste a priority in our own lives.
At Fooditude, we have been working towards reducing food waste across our business and have put in place processes, trained staff, partnered with several organisations and adopted tech to reduce food waste or dispose of it responsibly. We have decided to run a week of content, quizzes, instagram lives to raise awareness on issues around food waste and what people can do to prevent food waste.
Here is an outline for our program for the week:
Monday, 1st March – Take our Food Waste Quiz – It will remain live all the way thru Friday
Tuesday, 2nd March – Our chefs share a blog with a whopping 23 tips to reduce food waste at home.
Wednesday, 3rd March – Instagram Live with Fooditude’s Executive chef – Alex Bailey at 12.30 PM – ask him all about aforementioned tips and any other questions about using up odds & ends in your kitchen. We will also share a blog about all Trash to cash: our favourite brands preventing food waste
Thursday, 4th March – Fooditude partner with Bangers & Balls – a Supper club and meal delivery business in Kent – who champion nose to tail / Root to tip eating. Check out Trash to cash: our favourite brands preventing food waste.
Friday – 5th March – Fooditude talk to OLIO – how Contract caterers can use OLIO to redistribute surplus food in their canteens after lunch service.
